Biochemical Diagnostics, Inc. manufactures a wide variety of extraction and sample preparation columns for the clinical, forensic, research and pharmaceutical laboratories. Each column is manufactured from virgin polypropylene and includes a standard male luer fitting. Column packings and configurations vary according to the application. Since 1981 our hardware and column configuration is of "forensically sound" design so that the effluent from the column passes directly to either waste or a collection vessel without coming into contact with sources of contamination including hardware or disposable components such as stopcocks, disposable tips, or solvent guidance tubes. Please contact us for more information about any of the following products.
Clini-Skreentm Columns , with 25 mL reservoir, are packed with a macroparticle, nonionic, macroporous copolymer which has been specially washed, followed by impregnation with high boiling point wetting agents. The resin extracts "free" and conjugated steroids from a variety of body fluids.
VMA-Skreentm Columns, with 25 mL reservoir, are packed with a special silica gel selected by particle size and pore size for optimized recovery of VMA from urine.
GC/MS Grade Extraction Columns:
Two different column configurations are currently available, each with the same bed configuration but with different size reservoirs, 15 mL and 3 mL. The 96 deepwell plates are also available with the same beds as are available in the individual columns. This feature enables the operator to interchange between manual and automated methods without varying sample or reagent volumes. The 15 mL reservoir column column is available in both amber color to help protect light sensitive compounds, and natural opaque white and may be used manually or with robotic systems such as the Zymate® . The smaller 3 mL syringe barrel columns and the 96 deepwell plates are compatible with all robotic systems including the Hamilton Microlab® Star, Starlet, and NIMBUS platforms. The Nimbus is primarily designed for use with the 96 deepwell and microplates although adaptors are available to enable it to process the 3 mL reservoir columns. . A variety of packings are available in these columns including polymers, ion exchangers and several silica gel based bonded phases. Specific examples, available in both configurations, include:

Detectabuse®GV-65 Gravity Flow Columns, developed for quantitative extraction of drugs from body fluids, have become, because of their ruggedness and versatility, our most popular polymeric product. One of the most attractive features of the GV-65 column, besides low cost, is it's ability to efficiently extract a large range of compounds including all commonly abused drugs, therapeutic drugs and free and conjugated steroids. Most other manufacturers require two or more different columns to do the same job. The GV-65 column is packed with a microparticle polymeric copolymer (polystyrene with divinylbenzene crosslinkages) which has been impregnated with various wetting agents to optimize it's extraction efficiency . Adsorption in the GV-65 resin is based on its mixed mode capabilities. The underlying resin structure allows van der waals' forces and hydrogen bonding (non-ionic). A unique chemical switch enables you to activate the cation function of the resin. (see also GV-65C). This enables the simultaneous use of the non-ionic and cation functions of this versatile extraction column. This combination of functions enables the extraction of a broad range of compounds including those conjugated with glucuronides or sulfates. Please request more information if you are interested in separating conjugated form "free" compounds. The GV-65 column remains the same as it has always been when the cation function is not activated. These columns operate by gravity flow at approximately 1 mL/min or may be induced with vacuum or positive pressure. They are generally used with 0.5-3.0 mL of urine, blood, serum or oral fluid and require less than one mL of elution solvent.

Detectabuse®GV-130 contains a higher fill of the resin used in the GV-65 gravity flow column. GV-130's are recommended when sample volumes exceed 3 mL (up to 15 mL) such as might be used for special projects or as preparation for TLC. For "dirty" samples we recommend the Multi-Prep® GV-130 Extraction Columns listed above. A filtered version of this column is available by special order in our standard 15 mL or 25 mL reservoir columns. The columns contain, in addition to the standard resin retaining frits, an additional removable synthetic cotton fibrous disc to handle “dirty” samples often encountered in Methadone Maintenance programs. These columns will extract acidic, neutral and basic drugs at a single pH of 8.4 from blood, urine, saliva, etc. The resin is useful at a wide pH range (1-12) without deterioration of the bed and requires only 1.5-2.0 mL of elution solvent. The column is being used extensively as a cleanup and extraction medium for procedures that require up to 15 mL of sample such as TLC.
* Please note that this column will replace the Multi-Prep® Mini-Bed Column which is being phased out of production during 2009.

Multi-Prep® GV-65C Gravity Flow Columns and 96 Deep Well Microplates are of the mixed bed strong cation exchange/non-ionic type. column is packed with a microparticle polymeric copolymer (polystyrene with divinylbenzene crosslinkages) which has been impregnated with various wetting agents to optimize it's extraction efficiency . Adsorption in the GV-65C resin is based on its mixed mode capabilities. The underlying resin structure allows van der waals' forces and hydrogen bonding (non-ionic). In addition, sulfonic acid groups give the resin its strong cation exchange capability. The GV-65C columns are able to extract a broad range of compounds including acidic, neutral and basic analytes. For example, the GV-65C column will extract all commonly tested for DOA and therapeutic monitoring drugs including THC and metabolites, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opiates and amphetamines.(see all methods) NEW! The 15 mL reservoir GV-65C column (Cat.#1430091-0) is now being manufactured in natural color to distinguish it from the amber 15 mL reservoir GV-65 column.

Multi-Prep® GVSA-100 & GVSA-200 Gravity Flow Columns are packed with a small particle, strong base, anion exchange resin structured on a crosslinked, porous polystyrene matrix with trimethyl ammonium functional groups. These columns are ideally suited for the extraction of acidic compounds from body fluids. Such diverse and often difficult to extract compounds including Gamma-hydroxybutyrate, Homocysteine, and Methylmalonic Acid are selectively and efficiently extracted. All procedures are run by gravity flow (1-2 mL/min) and usually do not require the use of a vacuum or positive pressure column drying step prior to elution.
